Congratulations! The closing has been finalized and you are a new homeowner! When strategizing what to do first, many new homeowners take advantage of the empty space and paint the walls before they ever move in.

However, one designer says that you should wait to paint your walls for a more cohesive space! According to Toronto designer Judith Taylor, the one thing you should wait to do when moving is to paint. In a post on Houzz titled, 12 Key Decorating Tips to Make Any Room Better, Taylor gives us a peek into her process. While there are other great tips such as hanging artwork at the right height or how to arrange furniture property on a rug, her top tip is to pick your paint color last.

She reasons that there are thousands of paint colors with various tints, tones and shades and that they all look different depending on the circumstances. Your wall may have an easterly facing window that catches the bright morning sun and is bathed in shade the rest of the day. Therefore, this room may look better with a brighter color. She also points out that you will want the color that best compliments all of the room’s accoutrements, including upholstery, artworks, rugs, etc. You would only be able to pick the color when everything has been placed inside.

It may seem counter-intuitive but wait to paint your walls!
